About the Company - Belcan Workforce Solutions is seeking an Overhead Line (OHL) Design Engineer for a leading UK construction and regeneration group. The position can be based in either London / Warwick / Derby / Manchester / Motherwell / York. This is a full-time, permanent position with hybrid working, requiring on-site presence twice a week.

About the Role - The OHL Design Engineer role will be reporting to the Associate OHL Engineer and will be responsible for all design elements of new build and refurbishment of overhead transmission lines in the UK.

Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of production of OHL detailed design packages.
  • Ensure compliance of designs with client and national technical standards.
  • Support team of junior engineers on the production of design packages and support their technical development.
  • Prepare calculations and technical/equipment specification documentation.
  • Execute complex assignments requiring the use of advanced techniques, resulting in the development of new or improved processes, equipment, and/or technological methods.
  • Undertake consultancy role on FEED stage projects, including production of technical reports and presentations.
  • Maintain compliance to CDM Regulations and all other legal and regulatory requirements associated with the nature of Overhead Line works.
  • Manage the delivery of projects in accordance with Management Systems to meet time, quality, budgetary and health and safety targets.
  • Overall OHL design with PLS-CADD in accordance with BS-EN 50341.
  • Production and checking of detailed drawings for the OHL design.
  • Production of wind load cases in accordance with BS-EN 50341 and relevant NNA.
  • Analysis of OHL structures with PLS-Tower.
  • Production of foundation loads.
  • Design and analysis of OHL Foundations.
  • Assist in the tendering process.
  • Preparation of design technical reports and other written documents.
  • Production of design concepts, drawings, specifications and other technical documents.
  • The adherence to and control of documents and drawings in accordance with Baker Hicks management procedures.
  • Design input/output within the designated risk management process.

Qualifications

  • BSc/BEng or MSc/MEng or equivalent in appropriate Engineering discipline.
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer professional status, or equivalent or working towards.

Required Skills

  • Experience in PLS-CADD, PLS-Tower is essential.
  • Experience in HV OHL design on UK TNO & DNO assets.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience applying SPEN, SSEN, and / or National Grid Technical Specification, Technical Guidance Notes, Supplier Requirements and Design Handbooks relating to Overhead Line Design in the UK.
  • Thorough understanding of current Construction (Design & Management) Regulations, UK Health & Safety legislation, and Sustainability principles.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in CAD packages such, MicroStation, AutoCAD, BoCAD, etc.
  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills.
  • Relevant experience including leadership of the development and implementation of engineering solutions.
  • Knowledge of engineering design management best practices with ability to implement this knowledge.
  • Knowledge of sustainability principles and environmental management legal requirements IT literate, with good knowledge of using Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong persuasion and negotiation skills with clients and employees.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to deal effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders across clients, industry, government and public.
  • Able to manage tasks on multiple projects and conflicting deadlines.
  • Able to work autonomously and/or as part of a project team.
  • Pro-active in building knowledge and understanding of the electricity transmission and distribution industry.
  • Engaged in the engineering community and how we can drive success for our clients.
  • Ability to develop innovative and practical solutions to a range of problems, and an understanding of how one issue may be part of a much larger solution.
  • Ability to make an effective and collaborative contribution to the team through sharing knowledge, promoting ideas, and valuing the contribution of all team members.
